Populate the field… agh!

Posted by Carol on 06/05/2011

This week I am mostly annoyed by the phrase ‘populate the field’.

An empty field. It clearly needs populating...

A few years back, if someone had asked me to do this I would have wondered why on earth they wanted me to fill a large area of grassland with people.

Of course today, as most people supposedly know,  it means ‘fill in the box’  in computer-speak.

So why not say ‘fill in the box’ ?   Read the rest of this entry »

I’m no royalist, but…

Posted by Carol on 29/04/2011

… I was mesmerised by today’s royal wedding. I must be getting soppy in my old age.

I had intended just to tune in for The Frock – but three

hours later, I was still in front of the telly, soaking in the visual atmosphere live from the Mall. (I was less than interested in the mutterings from the so-called experts in the studio. Lordy lord. Talk about money for old rope.)

Anyway, I think it’s fair to say, that one thing Britain does very well is pomp and pageantry. If it were an Olympic event we would sweep the boards every four years. It does fill you with a sense of pride.

The last time I sat down to watch this kind of thing was Charles and Di’s nuptials – when I was a mere teenager. I seem to remember the main talking point amongst my aunties was the sheer horror and impracticality of her dress. What was she thinking? Then we ate lots of cake.

I think it’s fair to say, Kate nailed that one today – the dress, that is, not the cake. Read the rest of this entry »

I am going deaf…

Posted by Carol on 20/04/2011

What’s the most challenging aspect of running a successful business in these economically challenged times?

Attracting new clients? Getting people to actually pay for work done? Charging the right fee?

For me it’s simple: going deaf.

Yes, you heard me.

It’s been a pretty dreadful few months as I have rapidly lost the ability to use a regular phone, can no longer hear the radio (it’s just noise) and have to watch tv with subtitles – something I only only used to do if there was a fancy foreign film on.

Day-to-day living is hard enough – but what about the business? I have to earn a living and I have to get on with it. But how?  Read the rest of this entry »

Welcome!

Posted by Carol on 11/04/2011

Yup. Finally, I’ve set up a blog. Welcome to anyone who has inadvertently stumbled across my virgin rambling.

I ummed and ahhed about doing this for a while. Then the social networking pressure became so great that not having a blog made me feel like a vegetarian at meat pie convention.

At the moment I’m just wiggling my toes in the water.  Looking at other people’s blogs is quite intimidating. They have so much activity. Two old journo pals of mine run particularly successful and impressive examples of this stuff.  There’s Tara at Sticky Fingers and Linda at Have a Lovely Time!

I think it will take some time before I get anywhere near their diverse and interactive content!

(ooh, that picture’s a bit big… might have to change that)

Anyway. If you’ve come here wanting to know all about Red Cat I thank you – but for info about all of my services, you’re best off going to the business’s website. This blog is pretty much for stuff relating to words – I have a bit of a thing for them :)

I hope to be able to offer my thoughts and advice, where I can, and would love feedback on any posts.

So. Now I can sign off from my first post and get a cuppa. I think I’ve earned it.

(Was that OK?)
